PlayStation or Dragon Ball as a gift

Both LEGO® sets are display pieces marked for adults, arriving a month apart in autumn 2026. If you can't tell which the person would prefer, I'd give the PlayStation, because there's more to do with it once it's built.

This is not financial advice. We report prices and official dates. We don't forecast what a set will be worth.

Ask one question first: did this person grow up with a grey console or with the anime? If you know the answer, you can stop reading and buy that one. The rest of this is for when you don't.

Who these are for

Both are for adults. PlayStation, set 72306, is marked 18+ and Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku, set 11390, is marked 18+. If the gift is for a child, neither belongs on your list. Gifts by budget and our guide to age marks are better places to start.

Why I lean PlayStation

It does more after the last brick goes on. LEGO describes a near 1:1 replica of the original console with functional Open and Power buttons and a controller that plugs in. Open the lid and there are two dioramas: a small track from Gran Turismo with tiny cars, and an Ape Escape scene with the monkey helmet. You can hide them or take them out and display them.

Anyone opening this has something to find. That's the kind of surprise a present can carry on its own.

It's also compact. Over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep, by LEGO's numbers, so it fits on a desk beside a real setup, and you don't have to ask whether they've got the room. It's 1,911 pieces.

The weak spot is obvious. To someone who never owned one, it's a grey box.

Why Dragon Ball might be right anyway

Dragon Ball wins on presence. Shenron is the point of this set: LEGO describes a long, looping body with flowing scales, rising over 32 cm from a base with seven 2x2 bricks for the Dragon Balls. Kid Goku rides his Kintoun in the middle, as a minifigure you can detach and move around. It's 1,764 pieces.

It's also a beginning. LEGO calls it the first product from its partnership with Toei Animation and says more Dragon Ball sets will follow in 2027. A fan who gets this one now has somewhere to go next. The PlayStation release promises no follow-up.

There's less to do with it, by LEGO's own description. You build it, you pose Goku, you look at it. For a fan that's plenty. For a maybe-fan it's a large dragon on the sideboard.

Price, and a trap in the per-piece figures

Here's your market:

  • PlayStation: £139.99$179.99€159.99€159.99€159.99€159.99€159.99, or 7.3p9.4¢8.4c8.4c8.4c8.4c8.4c a piece
  • Dragon Ball: £129.99$179.99€139.99€139.99€139.99€139.99€139.99, or 7.4p10.2¢7.9c7.9c7.9c7.9c7.9c a piece

On the prices we read on 3 Nov 2026, Dragon Ball is lower in the UK and in the five euro markets we track, and the two match in the US. Both were at RRP.

Per piece, the answer flips with your country. PlayStation comes out lower in the UK and the US. Dragon Ball comes out lower in the euro markets. So don't take a verdict on this from a friend abroad. For a gift, I'd look at the total and ignore the rate anyway, since nobody unwraps a price per piece. Our autumn list by price per piece has the wider picture.

Timing, if you need it soon

The two launches sit a month apart, and each had a window for LEGO Insiders before everyone else.

PlayStation: Insiders from 1 October 2026, everyone from 4 October 2026. Dragon Ball: Insiders from 1 November 2026, everyone from 4 November 2026. The release says you need LEGO Insiders membership before that date. On 3 Nov 2026, the US listing read Coming soon and the other six read Available, so read your own status: AvailableComing soonAvailableAvailableAvailableAvailableAvailable for Dragon Ball and AvailableAvailableAvailableAvailableAvailableAvailableAvailable for PlayStation.

The release names LEGO.com and LEGO Stores for Dragon Ball. The PlayStation's release adds select retailers, though our tracker reads only LEGO.com for both right now.

7.6/10

The PlayStation is my pick for an unsure gift: it has buttons, a controller to plug in and dioramas hidden inside. Choose Dragon Ball for anyone who loves the anime.

Scored by Pavel Ryzhikh, 3 Nov 2026. An opinion from official data: no hands-on test.

Good

  • PlayStation: near 1:1 scale, with working Open and Power buttons
  • Dragon Ball: tall display model with a detachable Kid Goku

Not good

  • PlayStation means little to someone who never had the console
  • Dragon Ball's release lists fewer ways to buy it
