Minas Tirith against Rivendell and Barad-dûr
Three LEGO® cities and fortresses from Middle-earth, all reviewed by the same Brickset writer. I'd buy Rivendell first, and Minas Tirith if the price doesn't stop you.

These three make a tidy comparison for one reason: the same person reviewed them. CapnRex101 covered Rivendell in February 2023, Barad-dûr in May 2024 and Minas Tirith in July 2026, all for Brickset, all with copies from LEGO. I've built none of them, so I'm leaning on those reviews and on LEGO's data. The set table on this page has pieces and prices for your market.
Short version: the reviews like all three. I'd buy Rivendell.
Price and pieces
Minas Tirith is the largest and the dearest. Brickset calls it the largest LEGO The Lord of the Rings set to date, and it has the highest price of the three on LEGO.com in all seven markets we track, checked 3 Nov 2026. Rivendell has 6,167 pieces and Barad-dûr 5,471 pieces.

Oddly, the biggest set isn't the worst deal by that measure. In the euro and dollar markets Minas Tirith comes out lowest of the three per piece. In the UK it's level with Rivendell after rounding. Barad-dûr is highest in all seven, on the same check. All three carry the same age mark, 18+, and our Lord of the Rings series page has them together.
What each one is
Minas Tirith, set 11377. This one measures over 59 cm high, 62 cm wide and 37 cm deep, by LEGO's numbers. A microscale city wraps around minifigure-scale scenes, including the throne room. There are 10 minifigures plus Shadowfax, and Brickset says no stickers. Brickset's strongest praise is "potentially the best combination of minifigure-scale and microscale construction" it has seen in an official set. The complaints: upper levels are distorted, buildings should be denser, and Aragorn gets a generic sword. LEGO released it on 4 June 2026 for all, with Insiders in from 1 June. The Grond gift ran from 1 to 7 June 2026 and is gone.
Rivendell, set 10316. 73 cm across, in three sections that join with Technic axles, which helps if you ever move it. Fifteen minifigures, with the Fellowship at the centre. Brickset's opening summary calls it "among the best sets ever produced", and the complaints are small: a dull area near the bench, too little variety in Elven hair pieces, and 14 stickers. It's the colourful one, all autumn trees and tiled roofs.
Barad-dûr, set 10333. A tower 83 cm tall on a base 45 cm across. Sauron finally appears as a minifigure, and Brickset praises the flaming Eye and the use of colour on a mostly black tower. It also has working doors. Against that, interiors are "mixed in quality", Frodo and Sam should have looked shabbier, and 14 stickers include seven on curved inner surfaces, which sounds fiddly.
How I'd choose
Shelf shape decides a lot, and these differ more than the piece counts suggest. Barad-dûr is tall and narrow. Rivendell is wide. Minas Tirith is close to square from the front and fairly deep. Brickset thinks Minas Tirith's size sits well with the other two.
Then there's what you want to look at. Rivendell has colour, which a Tolkien shelf of grey stone and black towers will otherwise lack. For me that settles it. If I could only own one, I'd want the set people look at from across a room.
Pick Minas Tirith if you loved the siege and enjoy clever design. Brickset recommends it outright, and the mix of scales sounds like the most interesting problem of the three. Barad-dûr is the easy choice for villains, and for a narrow corner.
None of the three is listed as retiring soon on LEGO.com, checked 3 Nov 2026, so there's no clock on this. Compare that with the Icons sets that are retiring. For more on the range these sit beside, try who Icons is for, and big sets by piece count puts all this into a wider list.

8.8/10
Rivendell first, for colour and the Fellowship. Minas Tirith has the cleverest design and the most pieces. Barad-dûr is the one for people who want height and a villain.
